Her research is supported by the MARIAL Center, the University of Witten/Herdecke in Germany and the Center for Interdisciplinary Memory Research in Essen, Germany under the guidance of Professor Harald Welzer. Bleakney has a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in philosophy and culture from the University of Witten/Herdecke in Germany. She has studied at the University of California, Berkeley; San Francisco State University; and London School of Economics.
